Ok, so you want to go doorless in your Cherokee? Here’s one method of doing this.
So to start this off, I’ll first say this, i have a 1997 Cherokee, but for some reason it has pre-97 hinges, I assume just because this was the crossover year, so this may apply to you as well, make sure to check your hinges, theyre discernable enough between the 2 different styles that you should recognize which one you have right away. Also, i chose to just snip all my door wires as i only had power mirrors and speakers, nether of which i cared about too much, you can always acquire quick connect plugs to splice onto the wires for yours so that you can retain your power stuff in the doors. With that said, on with the write up.

I have heard of people removing the hinges to do this mod, which makes cutting them easier, but it also makes it so you need to reallign them perfectly for the doors to shut like they did before off the factory lot. For the purposes of having my doors close like stock when i was finished, I chose to leave the door and its hinges still attached to the cherokee so that they do not move throughout the whole process.

Tools I used:

Dremel tool

Box of reinforced cutoff wheels

5/16″Metal punch

Hammer

Vice

We’ll start with the driver side front door, first thing you need to do is cut the bottom half of the hinge off

It’s best to cut as close to the edge of the torx bolt head as possible, just makes life easier. It is also important to make at least one slot cut in the lip surrounding the hinge below the portion of hinge where you have just cut.

Once you’re sure you have cut all the way through that portion of hinge, allign the metal punch on the edge of the cut off section of hinge, and hammer it free from the pin, it really takes some ‘negotiating’ with the hammer but rest assured it will come out with enough concentrated hammering. This is also why you slotted the surrounding lip, so that when you hammer the piece of hinge off, it can bend and pass over that section of lip.

Repeat this process for the other hinge on the door.

You will see one of these:

In the picture mine is already disconnected, but that piece is the door hold, it keeps the door from swinging freely when open, i simply hammered the pin out holding it and pushed it into the door so it would be out of the way, if you want yours still, you can acquire a hitch pin for quick disconnected purposes, i chose not to.

You hinge should now look similar to this:

With both hinges cut and hammered off, your doors can now be taken off, try and lift them as straight up as possible so you arent just leveraging the door.

Dont be suprised if its quite hard to remove the first time, as theyve been sitting in the hinge for god knows how long, they tend to set in there nicely. Once the door is finally off, your door hinge should look like this:

And the hinge on the side of the vehicle will look like this:

In my door vehicle-side hinge, there was a metal-like sleeve in the hingehole that I removed because it made removal a pain as it kept getting crushed inside, check yours for this.

The catch with the passenger side is, though not in all cases, the hinges were flipped at the factory, meaning, the pin in the hinge is upside down, so when you hammer off the hinge bottom like before, the pin will come with it. This is where the vice and socket come into play. The pin on mine was pressed in and splined, making it impossible to pull out by hand, so I took it inside to the vice. We put the small socket over one end, and lined it up in the vice so that the vice would press the pin out into the socket. This worked without a problem. Once its out of the hinge bottom piece, take the pin back to your door hinge on the door and hammer it in the right way. Voila, your doors are removable just like a Wrangler. Lift off, drop in. The process is the same for all 4 doors.

People have asked me what i did about speakers, i picked up a set of Q-Logic kick panel speaker enclosures off one of the forums for cheap, but they can be had here:

Shot of them installed:
